This adventure begins in the vibrant capital, Addis Ababa, and traverses the northern historic route, visiting enchanting sites such as Lake Tana, Gondar, Lalibela, and Axum, which feature several UNESCO World Heritage sites. In this fabled land where legend and history are deeply entwined, experience hikes among villages leading to sacred island monasteries of Lake Tana, and explore the majestic Castles of Gondar, where you will also enjoy a private coffee ceremony.

At dawn, wander through the ethereal subterranean churches of Lalibela, glowing in the early morning light, and marvel at the towering stelae of Axum, coming as close as possible to the legendary Ark of the Covenant. Equipped with the best vehicles and escorted by expert guides, immerse yourself in the ancient history, diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and spirituality of this captivating country and its people. This itinerary can easily be tailored to your preferences, and if your travel dates are flexible, we recommend experiencing Ethiopia during the colorful Timkat festival on January 19.

Timkat / Epiphany
Timkat, often referred to as Ethiopian Epiphany, is one of the main festivals in the Ethiopian year, celebrated on January 19 in most years. This sacred event commemorates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and begins on Timkat Eve (known as Timkat Wazima) when Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) are joyfully paraded and taken to a special location for the night. Congregants accompany the procession with lively singing and dancing, while priests don their finest garments, shaded by ornate brocade umbrellas.

In Lalibela, the night is filled with local beer (Tela) and music resonating from large drums (Kabero). The following morning, on Timkat itself, a special mass is held, water is blessed, and joyous splashing ensues. The most famous celebrations occur in Gondar, where many partake in the refreshing waters of the historic Fasilidas baths, though a more authentic experience can be found with local communities in Lalibela and Meket. After the festivities, the Tabots are processed back to their churches, except for Mikael, who has his holy day celebrated the day after Timkat. The day following Timkat is also known as Kana Zagalila, commemorating Jesus’ miracle of turning water into wine at the Wedding in Cana.
