Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be an experienced trekker to travel to Nepal?
No. Nepal has trekking routes for many different fitness levels, from short walks through mountain villages to challenging multi-day Himalayan treks. You do not have to climb to Everest Base Camp to experience the mountains. Routes can be selected according to your experience, fitness level and preferred level of comfort.
Should I choose the Everest region or the Annapurna region?
Both regions offer spectacular Himalayan scenery, but the experience is different. The Everest region is famous for views of Mount Everest and Sherpa culture, while the Annapurna region offers an especially varied landscape of forests, mountain villages, valleys and high-altitude passes. The best choice depends on how much time you have and what kind of trekking experience you want.
What is a teahouse trek in Nepal?
Teahouses are small mountain lodges located along many of Nepal’s popular trekking routes. They provide simple accommodation and meals, allowing travellers to trek without carrying camping equipment. Teahouse trekking is especially common in areas such as Annapurna and Everest.
How important is altitude when trekking in Nepal?
Altitude is an important consideration on Himalayan treks because many routes climb above 3,000 metres and some reach well above 5,000 metres. A well-planned itinerary includes gradual ascents and enough time to adjust to higher elevations. Your trekking route should always match your fitness and previous experience at altitude.
Can I enjoy Nepal without doing a long mountain trek?
Absolutely. Nepal also offers historic cities, temples, cultural experiences, wildlife, lakes and shorter walks. Kathmandu and its surrounding heritage sites can be combined with Pokhara or nature experiences, making Nepal interesting even for travellers who do not want to undertake a demanding trek.
Do I need a guide or trekking permit in Nepal?
It depends on the route. Nepal requires permits for protected and restricted trekking areas, and specific popular trekking routes require travellers to be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and carry a trekking agency-issued TIMS card. The requirements should therefore be checked when your route is planned.
