Lalibela – Ethiopia’s Sacred Rock-Hewn Churches
Lalibela is one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable historical and spiritual destinations. Located in the scenic Ethiopian Highlands, this ancient town is renowned for its breathtaking rock-hewn churches, carved directly from solid volcanic rock. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lalibela is considered one of the world’s greatest architectural and religious treasures.
Discover the Rock-Hewn Churches
The town is home to 11 magnificent monolithic churches, each carved from a single block of stone over 800 years ago. These extraordinary churches are connected by a network of tunnels, narrow passageways, courtyards, and hidden staircases, creating a unique underground complex unlike anywhere else in the world.
The most iconic church is Bete Giyorgis (Church of Saint George), famous for its perfectly carved cross-shaped design and exceptional craftsmanship.
A Living Centre of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity
Lalibela remains an active place of worship and one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. According to tradition, King Lalibela commissioned these churches during the 12th and 13th centuries to create a “New Jerusalem” for pilgrims who were unable to travel to the Holy Land.
Today, priests continue daily religious ceremonies, preserving centuries-old traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Experience Ethiopia’s Most Celebrated Festivals
Visiting Lalibela during one of Ethiopia’s major religious festivals offers an unforgettable cultural experience.
- Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) celebrated on 7 January, attracting thousands of pilgrims dressed in traditional white clothing.
- Timkat (Epiphany) one of Ethiopia’s most colourful celebrations, featuring religious processions, chanting, prayers, and vibrant cultural traditions.
These festivals provide visitors with an authentic opportunity to witness Ethiopia’s deep spiritual heritage.

Walking through Lalibela is like stepping back in time. Visitors can explore ancient churches, underground tunnels, sacred courtyards, centuries-old manuscripts, beautifully crafted crosses, and remarkable religious artwork.
